Culture and Politics
(E-) Journals, Zines, Publications, and Newspapers
- Bad Subjects
I co-founded Bad Subjects in 1992.
Our slogan is "political education for everyday life." This is
an online and print zine devoted to the ruthless criticism
of everything existing. We're leftists unafraid to criticize
leftist dogma, and cultural critics unafraid to enjoy culture.
There's even a little bit of utopianism. Bad Subjects is the oldest
online political zine, and one of the oldest online publications
period.
- The Left
Business Observer
Doug Henwood's spectacular journal of radical
politics and economics offers keen insight into the world of big
business and big government -- with hard stats to back it
up.
- Zinemart
A zine mart? Hmm . . . kinda weird to put it that
way. Nevertheless, a good source of information online. Zinesters
of the Factsheet Five variety usually scorn e-zines, so it's
nice to have some positive representation on the web.
- Bright Lights Film Journal
A popular-academic hybrid of movie analysis, history, and commentary.
- Film Threat
"Hollywood's indie voice" is a free weekly with reviews, commentary,
and coverage of film industry events.
- Advertising Age
The magazine for commerce culture. Creepy yet luridly fascinating.
- Entertainment Weekly
Very slick and yet also very smart magazine covering everything
from music and movies, to new media and books. Our theory is that a lot of
former academics write for this magazine. Highly recommended.
- The Village Voice
Founded by Norman Mailer in 1955, this is one of the oldest
alternative weekies in the United States. The Voice covers news and culture
which aren't quite mainstream.
- Boston Phoenix
Highly respected arts and entertainment newspaper with added bonus
of extensive coverage of the queer community.
- Rolling Stone
The famous rock magazine online.
- HotWired
Wired Magazine online, and it's much, much better.
Covers new media and cyberculture, and includes daily updates which do not
appear in the magazine. Also sponsors the web satire zine Suck.
- Science Fiction Weekly
A professional magazine devoted to the latest scifi entertainment news.
- Galaxy Magazine
(Online Version)
One of the oldest and most influential scifi magazines of the 20th Century.
You'll find back issues here, and a history of the magazine. Hint: when
you arrive, go to the "editorial offices" on their odd map.
Entertainment
- Amazon.com
The first and best giant online bookstore. Consume some books today!
- Le Video
Located at the edge of my fabulous neighborhood in San Francisco, this video
store is one of the only institutions that actually inspired me to kneel down
in gratitude when I first entered it. Simply the best collection of videos available,
including cult, foreign, TV, horror, and pornography. Plus the biggest collection
of videos from Something Weird I've ever seen.
- Reel Video
I have a lot of problems with the way these folks have organized their
store in Berkeley (very incoherent genres). On the other hand, I
like being able to buy movies online, and they let you rent movies for five
days. Their prices are good, and the selection, while disorganized, is big.
- The Internet Movie Database
Full of great information and trivia about practically any movie you
might imagine.
- TV Link
Huge and well-organized index of links relating to television (and
some film). Includes studios, individual shows, and archives.
This is a good place to start any TV-related research project.
- TV Guide Entertainment Network
It's TV Guide online, with lots of snappy and current TV information, plus
extra stuff on sports and music.
-
Cult TV Episode Guide
Links to episode guides online for cult shows from The X-Files to
Starsky and Hutch.
- Nielsen Ratings for TV
Nielsen ratings, updated weekly, plus an archive of past weekly
ratings.
- Ultimate TV
Daily news about everything related to television from Los Angeles.
- SF Site
Up-to-date and slickly presented information/reviews on contemporary scifi
books and other media. Highly recommended.
- SciFi, Fantasy, and Horror Book
Database
This database is a collection of books, synopses, reviews, and author
biographies from the scifi, fantasy and horror genres.
-
Publisher's Weekly Bestseller Lists
Features several bestseller lists, from children's lit. to mass market
paperbacks. You can also search the bestseller list database.
- Book Wire
Information on contemporary books and the book industry. Also
hosts several trade journals, as well as the BookInfo database, which
includes reviews and "author event" dates.
