This course will address such questions as: Given San Francisco's diversity, how is it possible for the city to function at all? What institutions, events, and practices are sources of integration and what has been their history? What are the politics of a multicultural city like? What is the relationship between power and culture? How do different communities manifest themselves culturally and politically, and how does their mode of expressing cultural identity affect their political power?
