See you at WisCon this weekend!

Feminism + science fiction / Wisconsin = WisCon! I’ll be at the world’s premiere feminist science fiction this weekend in Madison, feeling about as happy as I could possibly be. I hope to return home with a lot of books and new ideas.

I’m speaking on a few panels: Friday night, I’m on a panel called “Whither Hero(in)es?”, a discussion about the (lack of) strong women in TV show Heroes; Sunday afternoon I’m part of the “Battlestar Galactica Debate,” which no doubt will involve much dissection of Starbuck. Then, Sunday night, I’m on a late-night panel called “What if you don’t want to have children?” Topic is self-explanatory. I’ll talk about why I got a tubal ligation 10 years ago. Monday afternoon is a book-signing for She’s Such a Geek, and then it’s back to San Francisco! If you’re there, please say hi! I can be shy about approaching people, but I’m very nice if you talk to me.

Okay, I have to ask: What is the debate about BSG in the feminist SF community? I know I could Google it… but I’m at work and don’t have time to (it is, after all, 5/25 now and both the 30th anniversary of Star Wars and Towel Day… busy day).

  2. regis Says:

    alas, no wiscon for me.

one of “heroes” stronger female characters hasn’t been on the show — a fair bit of offscreen plot has been driven by hana, who has the magical ability to CONTROL TEH INTARWEBS. and also the SMS messages. otoh, she’s a kick-ass jew. (because all israelis are either mossad agents or ultra-conservative devout rabbinical types. nobody works as a barrista and gets high after work over there, apparently)

  3. regis Says:

actually, i lied. she had an appearance in one episode.

  4. annalee Says:

@ Regis: Yes! We talked a LOT about Hannah on the panel. Apparently, she has a secret blog, too. Why the hell isn’t she on the show? They could play her up by getting rid of frakkin’ Psychic Cop, who is the lamest character ever.

  5. annalee Says:

@ Geoffrey: Apparently, the debate is whether BSG is good or bad for women. I’m saying it’s both.

  6. Lyda Morehouse Says:

Good panel in the end, dontcha think?

It was cool meeting you, BTW.

  7. annalee Says:

It was great meeting you, too, Lyda! I thought the BSG panel turned out fantastically well.
